Apply CPTPP benefits by destination and origin
UK government guidance lists CPTPP entry into force with Canada on September 1, 2026, and with Mexico on June 22, 2026. Entry with the first group of partners, including Japan, Singapore and Vietnam, began on December 15, 2024. The current development is the extension of applicable trading relationships, rather than a newly completed UK accession.
Preferential treatment depends on the product’s commodity code, the destination’s tariff commitments and compliance with rules of origin. UK invoicing, warehousing or re-export alone does not confer UK origin. Businesses should not assume that every high-end medical device receives a tariff reduction.
Confirm assessment-body approval before relying on facilitation
CPTPP national treatment provisions allow UK conformity assessment bodies to seek accreditation, approval or licensing in partner markets. Once approved, a body may assess against the destination’s requirements within its approved scope.
Businesses can first check:
- The product code and actual tariff under CPTPP and any alternative applicable trade agreement.
- Whether supply-chain records establish compliance with the relevant origin rules.
- Whether the chosen assessment body has destination-market approval covering the product and assessment activity.
Medical-device marketing, registration and local regulatory requirements still require separate confirmation. National treatment of assessment bodies does not automatically create mutual recognition of every report or declaration of conformity.
An assessment connecting the specific product, supply chain and destination will help a UK operating entity determine whether tariff or assessment benefits yield practical savings.
