The 25 August update is a featured-recall refresh
The Office for Product Safety and Standards updated its Product Recalls and Alerts page on 25 August 2026.
The update history describes the change as a refresh of featured recalls rather than a new recall policy or legal requirement.
The underlying OPSS database continues to publish product recalls, product safety reports, and product safety alerts for unsafe products in the United Kingdom.
OPSS uses three different alert types
Product recalls
A product recall applies to a specific product that has been sold in the UK and may require consumers to obtain a repair, replacement, refund, or other corrective action.
Product safety reports
A product safety report covers a specific unsafe product where corrective measures other than a recall have been ordered by an authority or are being undertaken by a business.
Product safety alerts
A product safety alert generally highlights a product category or sector presenting a risk of serious injury or fatality and may call for immediate action by businesses, authorities, or consumers.
The portal is not the UK medical-device recall source
For medical-device companies, the most important scope point is what the OPSS portal does not cover.
OPSS expressly states that the list does not cover food and drink, vehicles, medicines, or medical devices. The page directs users to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency for drugs and medical-device alerts.
This distinction matters for regulatory-intelligence systems that collect multiple UK safety feeds. OPSS should be treated as a general-product safety source, while medical-device vigilance and recall monitoring should remain mapped to MHRA channels.
What companies can check
- Separate OPSS and MHRA in UK recall-monitoring source registries.
- Use OPSS for non-medical consumer products, electrical equipment, PPE, and other products within the general product-safety framework.
- Avoid treating the OPSS recall database as the primary UK medical-device recall source.
- For diversified companies, assign ownership for OPSS, MHRA, DVSA, and other sector-specific safety-alert channels.
The August update is small and is better treated as a Regulatory Weekly item than as a standalone regulatory change. Its main value for medical-device teams is reinforcing the boundary between general UK product-safety monitoring and the separate MHRA medical-device safety system.
