What changed
Australia has registered the Private Health Insurance (Medical Devices and Human Tissue Products) Rules (No. 4) 2026, setting the next Prescribed List update for 1 November 2026. The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing announced the instrument on 19 October, the same day it was registered. It replaces the No. 3 rules.
The rules implement completed Prescribed List applications covering new listings, amendments, expansions, compressions, deletions and transfers. The instrument’s commencement provision specifies 1 November for the whole instrument. Its framework addresses listing criteria and private-health-insurance benefits for eligible medical devices and human tissue products. This is a reimbursement and listing update, not a new TGA technical safety standard.
Scope and timing
Device sponsors, hospital procurement and billing teams, and private health insurers should check their affected products against the November list before updating reimbursement records. The department provides separate files for new, deleted and changed entries, making a product-level review possible without assuming that every listed product’s benefit has changed.
The new rules and Prescribed List take effect on 1 November 2026. The list sets benefits payable under appropriate insurance policies; entitlement remains subject to the applicable coverage and statutory conditions.
